About 9% of the workers in the agricultural, forestry, or fishing sectors sustain injuries every year when they come in contact with farm machinery. Many others also sustain injuries on smallholdings, estates, or stables. This is not always reported in HSE statistics.
These injuries have led to 17 deaths, all of which were caused by farm machinery. Safety in the operation of any farm machinery or implements should be a priority.
Even minor injuries can lead to serious injury. Imagine your life if you fall a heavy piece on your foot and break your bone.
Here are 10 safety precautions to ensure your farm machinery is safe.
You can read the manual!
It doesn't matter whether you are looking for a compact tractor to operate your farm equipment, a manual will be helpful. Even if the implements are similar, it's worthwhile to review safety advice and put it into practice.
Properly maintain your home
Poorly maintained farm implements could be dangerous. You should make sure the machinery is in good working order before using it.
PTOs as well as PTO drive shafts need special attention. Every year, many people are seriously injured or killed by accidents involving PTOs. It is possible to purchase replacement shields.
Use the Right Tool for The Right Job
Do not use farm implements for purposes they were not intended. Failure to use the right tools can cause injury or malfunctions. You will also be able accomplish the job more efficiently if the tool is the right one for you.
Wear the Right Safety Gear
The guide should include information on appropriate protective clothing. But the basics include safety boots and eye and/or ear defenders. Additional protection is needed when you use tools like chainsaws. You may need chainsaw trousers or other protective clothing. Do not wear loose clothing or tie your shoes while operating farm implements. These could catch on moving parts. If your hair is long, tie it securely.
Take the time to ensure you have emergency assistance
Smaller farm equipment is easier to handle on your own, but heavier or more complex items will require an additional pair of hands. Ask for help and you won't be hurt.
Start-up Compact Tractors Sitting In the Seat
It is not a good idea to use a tractor as a power source for a stationary device. If you want to start the tractor smoothly, sit down.
The Zone of Risk Between Tractor And Implement is Not To Be Enter.
Always stay out of the area between the tractor's engine and the implement when it is running.
Make a plan for your future jobs
It is a good idea, before you start working, to walk around the field to check for hidden hazards. Potholes could cause damage to your equipment.
You can operate engines in areas that are well-ventilated
Use a compact tractor to operate implements like a log splitting machine or wood chipper in your yard. It's a good idea not to expose yourself to the elements and to protect you from the cold. Covered areas should be well ventilated to allow engine fumes to dissipate quickly.
Keep Children Away From Farm Machinery
Unfortunately, each year 2 to 3 children are hurt in farm accidents. 42% of the deaths involve machinery, trailers or equipment. 33% involve tractor. Any farm implements should always be monitored by a parent. Children over 14 who are interested in helping on the farm need to be properly trained and instructed, and closely monitored.
